Hello to my readers! Today is a very exciting post and I’m happy to finally show you part of our second bathroom (and final) renovation of our home. It went much faster than the last renovation, but that is because we learned a lot from our last renovation. AJ spent hours each day working very hard on getting the renovation completed. From ripping the bathroom down to the floor joists, to inserting insulation into the outer walls. It was back to square one with this room, and for lack of better words, in pretty interesting condition.
A few things about old homes, you will always find something you cannot believe while renovating the home. Thankfully what we found wasn’t too terrible but quite honest, shocking. When AJ took out the shower walls, the wall that is an exterior wall was lined with foil. Yes, foil. Not insulation. We have wondered why our home was rather inefficient in regards to utilities, but now we know why. So we added in the insulation and continued on.
In the photo above you can see our basement, so it certainly was a tad scary. Sometimes I don’t know how AJ can do the things he does, because I for sure would have fallen through.
Here’s a look at what we were working with through the renovating process below. Oh and, yes that’s a hole in the wall behind the vacuum and another hole from a previous mirror. We had to replace piping about two years ago so that was fun. The previous owners also had a built in mirror type of thing, so that’s what the rectangle hole is from. Yet, another great reason to add some thick shiplap on this wall (that’ll be a post itself).
This renovation was a whirlwind, but it’s definitely my favorite! We developed the color scheme during our trip to the Bahamas at a beautiful Italian restaurant. That’s where I got the color choices, and each time I go into our bathroom I’m reminded of the Bahamian beauty and shades of blue. I’ve always loved the beach, and I dream of owning a beach condo or house some day so I can decorate with all things beachy.
I wanted to have more of a fresh, cottage, farmhouse look all wrapped in one in this bathroom. I found the pieces from various shops and sites, but I’m focusing on the vanity/wall decor today. The beautiful mirror was one I found at Kirkland’s and it’s just stunning. It is the perfect accent against the white shiplap, and I love how it pops with the stained vanity.
Our same vanity light from upstairs has made its second appearance in our home, but they were such a steal when we bought them! The vessel sink was from our old vanity, as was the faucet. It helped us with the budget, and we were able to invest that money into our vanity top.
The top was a gorgeous piece of quartz from a local countertop shop. We were able to go pick it out ourselves, and we also saved money by installing it ourselves (huge saver right there!). We went with the route of choosing our top to make it that much more unique, and for the quality. Thankfully AJ has the skills and the tools to custom build the perfect vanity, because the store vanities just were not cutting it. They weren’t built well and they would not fit the piping we had in this bathroom.
I styled the bathroom with a rustic, farmhouse shelf found online from Antique Farmhouse. It took some time to get to the house due to a backlog on the order, but it was well worth the wait! It’s a piece that was needed to help add in the farmhouse feel of the bathroom, so I was pretty set on it.
Overall this bathroom has been fun to decorate, and I’m not done showing you all of it yet! We have completed everything except for the shelves, which I’m still currently searching for some reasonably priced corbels for them! I just can’t seem to find something of the right size and price, but I’m wanting to do some rustic white shelves that we build ourselves.
I can’t wait to show you more, so stay tuned for more photos of the shower, floor tile, window, and shelves in the bathroom! I will be doing more posts surrounding our tips and how I chose other pieces this second go around of a bathroom renovation. If you have any questions on the renovation please feel free to let me know in the comments!
