Sunday.
Sundays are for many things. Sundays are for laughter, for worship, for rest, for getting things done, for family. Sundays mean so many things for so many people. I love Sundays because of this. Sundays have changed and become something different for me just about every year. It’s funny how you can look back and see how many habits or things you do differently as you grow.
Today’s Sunday post is all about my Grandma Sis’ antique White sewing machine that was passed down to her, and now passed down to me. I wanted to start this post out with explaining to you all how much my grandma meant to me. She was an inspiration and nothing short of an angel. If you had the pleasure of getting to know my grandma, I would say you are lucky and I mean that with every ounce of love. She truly has been someone who my family and myself have looked up to. When any important decision comes up in our lives, we all ask the same thing:
“What would Sissy Mae do?”
My grandma passed away about two and a half years ago, but she still finds her way into our lives. I have a special ring my grandma had that I wear almost every day, and now I have this beautiful sewing machine of her’s. It’s from the late 1800’s or early 1900’s and is in prestige shape. All of the member’s of our family have pieces from her in their homes, and I’m so happy I get to keep this one. It’s gorgeous and has so much meaning with it. It reminds me often to make sure I’m doing what I have dreamt of doing and striving to be the woman I know I can be. My grandma was a strong woman, a kind woman, and she loved wine and cooking! I definitely have the wine and cooking parts down, but I need to spend a little more time on bettering myself always.
When my cousin was moving some stuff out of my grandma’s house, I was super quick to say I would take my grandma’s sewing machine. Not only do I love it because it was my grandma’s, but it truly is beautiful. I was debating on how well the color scheme would go with my spare bedroom, but as soon as AJ and I put it in the room it was just a perfect fit. The sizing couldn’t have been any perfect, and the color matches the other wood tones I have in the room. It’s a vintage piece and adds the perfect pop to the room of blue and grey.
For all of you vintage hunters out there, I tend to see similar sewing machines like my grandma’s from time to time. I tend to see the Singer sewing machines more often, which are slighter newer than the White sewing machines from what I’ve found. It depends on the model you’ve got for the age, but these sewing machines are great antiques to have! If you have the chance to get one or have one passed down to you, I would highly recommend keeping it. It’s a great accent piece with years of history.
I talked about this slightly and I’ll touch on it in some future post, but I wanted to add more warm wood tones to this bedroom since there is a lot of cool grey tones. It can sometimes be hard to add in wood tones with certain grey, so I recommend to be careful with how warm you get with your tones. I tried to stay away from a wood tone that is more orangey and instead went with a more brown tone, which has made the wood tone element pop even more. I can say I’m certainly happy with me choice!
I styled the top with an antique phone I found on clearance at Home Goods, some Rae Dunn, books, and floral accents. The books and phone actually cover up the imperfections on the top, which isn’t much but they do a great job of hiding those spots. I’m a lover for greenery and cotton, so as you can imagine those were some easy choices for me with my floral. When certainly holidays and seasons come I’ll definitely make some slight changes with the decor on the sewing machine, but not much. I want to keep it simple to really make the machine stand out more because it is so uniquely beautiful.
So if you have an antique sewing machine, don’t be afraid to show that thing off and display it in your home! There are many ways you can style it, plenty of rooms to add it to and it’s a great memory if you received from a loved one. It could be anything from a nightstand, entry way table, or even refurbished into a vanity (I saw a gorgeous one on a friend’s Instagram account)! Get creative and style away my friends, I know you will surprise yourself with how much you’ll end up loving it.
Enjoy your week friends! I hope you’ve loved today’s post and got to learn a little bit more about why this piece is so special to me. Feel free to show me your amazing antique pieces and how you’ve styled them! Don’t forget to leave comments or questions, and subscribe to my blog to hear when I have updates!
With Love,
